Library Access Services Specialist I

Library Specialists are front-line library position combining customer service, reference assistance, and day-to-day operations across a college library system. The position helps in-person and virtual patrons navigate library resources — catalogs, databases, and discovery tools — and routes complex requests to the appropriate departments. Staff cross-train across several functional areas including reserves, interlibrary loans, periodicals, stacks maintenance, fines & fees, and event displays. The role involves troubleshooting computers, tablets, printers, scanners, and assistive technology, managing computer sessions, and using the library’s integrated management system to check materials in/out, update patron records, and track overdue items. Maintaining circulation statistics is also expected.

Staff are responsible for opening, closing, and securing the building, and take ownership of safety and operations during early mornings, evenings, and weekends when senior supervisors are absent.

The position requires working knowledge of FERPA (patron privacy), U.S. Copyright Law, and the College’s acceptable use technology policy. Staff create and maintain displays recognizing holidays, heritage months, and topics of community interest, while promoting library resources and services.

Hours vary between 8 AM–10 PM on weekdays and 9 AM–5 PM on Saturdays.

Qualifications:
Applicant must have effective verbal and written communication skills. A demonstrated commitment to excellent customer service and communicating in a professional manner with a diverse college population is required. The applicant must be able to exercise tact, courtesy, and patience when working collaboratively, as well as work independently. Other expectations include effective multi-tasking, time management skills, and working with a high degree of accuracy.

Experience:
Knowledge of library fundamentals, modern office procedures, and experience using a library management system to perform job related activities is required, as well as basic competency with personal computers and the Microsoft Office software applications. Ability to install, test, evaluate, and troubleshoot hardware/software and devices is required. Experience with Alma by Ex Libris, the cloud-based library management system is preferred. Experience in an academic library is a plus.

Education and Training:
AA degree. One year of experience working in a library, or two years of administrative support or customer service.
